Help blow out the birthday candles as South Burnaby Metro Club turns 70

The South Burnaby Metro Club which was founded in 1952 to encourage youth's sporting activities in the community celebrates its 70th anniversary with music, cake and entertainment on Sept. 10 in Bonsor Park and recreation centre.

It's time to put on our party hats as South Burnaby Metro club invites community members from Burnaby and New West to celebrate the organization's 70th anniversary.

For 70 years, the non-profit club has been providing young people with sports programs. Recognizing that youths in the community needed access to sports activities, a group of residents started what is now called South Burnaby Metro Club back in September 1952.

Filled with live music, food and entertainment, the club is organizing a community party at Bonsor Park and recreation centre on Sept. 10 starting at noon.

The organizer and the secretary of the club, Beverly Thacker, said that the club will celebrate community spirit to mark the 70th anniversary celebrations.

"For our 20th anniversary celebrations, they built a chapel in Burnaby Village Musuem," she said. "This year, for our 70th, we are adding volleyball to our list of programs for our boys and girls."

The club has been fondly recognized for supporting youth in soccer, basketball and baseball. Soon, the club will add volleyball to that roster.

They are also inviting former members of the club to take part in a historic photo session at 1:30 p.m.
