Lubna Abdelrahman of the Bitmakaly Women's Association is hosting a symposium on violence against immigrant women on March 9, the day after International Women's Day. There will be four panellists speaking about violence against women and how to empower women.

"We're going to talk about how Muslims see women," said Abdelrahman, who's originally from Sudan. "I want to make it clear: in our holy book there is nothing written that says man can hit his wife."

The event is on Saturday, March 9, from 4 to 9 p.m., at 7845 Edmonds St. Tickets are $25, which includes a meal and a multicultural fashion show.

Abdelrahman hosts a monthly community market that gives immigrant women a chance to sell things, learn business skills and earn money. For more on her group, go to www.bitmakalyweo.com.
