The BASES Family Thrift Store on Edmonds near Canada Way in Burnaby is a non-profit organization that raises funds to support after-school programs in the local community schools in both Burnaby and New Westminster.

They are trying to raise $4,000 to support the Great Book Giveaway. BASES wants to give 10 books to every child in up to three local Burnaby elementary schools before the end of the school year.

On the fundraiser, it says: “Books are expensive and not all families have the financial resources to purchase them. As well, not all children can access our public libraries over the summer holidays. BASES wants to give 10 books to every child in 3 local Burnaby elementary schools.”

In an interview with the NOW, Isabel Barros, the executive director at BASES said: “We're looking to fundraise for the full month of April, people can even come into the store and donate by cheque or cash. And we can provide tax receipts as well. That whole point here is just to give back to the community in a variety of different ways.

“We would help them choose 10 up to 10 books, that would be best for their appropriate age, and the books would all be brand new,” said Barros.
