Metrotown's skyline may be changing yet again, as a highrise condo development is planned for a four-lot site that is currently home to low-rise rental apartment buildings.
A recent city staff report indicated that the city is working with Amacon Development on a development plan to replace the older buildings at 6750 Dunblane Ave., 5025 Imperial St., and 6729 and 6789 Marlborough Ave. with a high-rise apartment tower atop street-oriented townhomes.
The apartment buildings were all built in the ’50s and ’60s. The Dunblane Avenue property is currently vacant due to fire damage, according to the report, and the Imperial Street building is in fair condition, as is the building at 6789 Marlborough Ave., but the building at 6729 Marlborough Ave. is in poor condition.
Overall, there are 47 rental units on the four properties.
The surrounding area to the north, east and west primarily consists of low-rise apartment buildings, with one single-family home to the north. There is a newer low-rise multi-family development to the south, as well as older single-family homes, according to the report.
However, there are other highrise developments in the works in the area, including The Met 1 and 2, The Park and Midori Residences, the report added.
The lot parcel is just down the street from another major highrise project under construction, put forward by Polygon Development, which also replaced four older low-rise rental apartment buildings.
That development, which was the subject of a recent Burnaby NOW story, is at 6579 and 6611 Marlborough Ave., and 6592 and 6650 Dunblane Ave.
City staff is working with Amacon on a development plan to be sent to public hearing at a later date.
