The female driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 72-year-old Burnaby resident on June 30 has come forward.
According to Staff Sgt. Major John Buis, the suspect driver turned herself into police earlier this week following an emotional plea from the victim's family last Friday.
"She did the right thing and came in earlier this week after seeing media coverage where police and the family appealed to her to come forward. We're appreciative of her cooperation, and the media's assistance in this investigation," Buis said in a press release.
Ed Simpkins was killed when a car struck him while he was riding his bike along 13th Avenue at Wright Street.
Police announced last week they had obtained surveillance footage from a nearby security camera that showed there was a second witness vehicle that was at the scene the night of June 30.
"Our investigation is ongoing, however, and we still need a key witness to come forward, the driver of a four-door hatchback, possibly grey or brown, who we think came across the incident seconds after it occurred around 8: 30 p.m. on June 30," Buis said.
In an earlier interview with the NOW, Buis said it's unknown whether or not the second driver saw Simpkins or if he or she only saw the car stopped and decided to turn around rather than attempt to go around the scene.
"We believe this driver is critically important as a witness to our investigation," Buis said. "We urgently wish to speak with that person about what he or she may have seen that evening."
