Hyack Swim Club hits hot streak at nationals, 2022 Canada Summer Games

The local swimmers recently finished second overall in team points at Canadian championships in Montreal before heading to Niagara, Ont. with Team B.C.
Hyack Swim Club's Laon Kim has impressed during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The Hyacks Swim Club is continuing its recent success in the pool at the 2022 Canada Summer Games. 

Prior to arriving in Niagara, Ont., the Burnaby/New Westminster team was in Montreal for the Canadian Junior and Senior Championships from July 25 to Aug. 1.

They finished finished second overall in team points, third in the men's team category and sixth in mixed competition. 

Laon Kim stole the show for the club as the 14-year-old broke the national age-group record in the 800 m freestyle race, as well as three provincial records in the 50 m free, 100 m fly and 400 m individual medley. 

He brought home home four gold, three silver and two bronze medals from the national championships, and was also the winner of the 14-15 boys High Point Aggregate. 

At the 2022 Canada Summer Games, Kim claimed five medals:

  • Gold = 50 m freestyle
  • Gold = 4x100 m freestyle relay
  • Gold = 4x100 m medley relay
  • Silver = 4x200 m relay
  • Bronze = 100 m freestyle

Paul Orogo also had an extremely successful event in Montreal, finishing with two gold (100- and 200-metre backstroke), one silver (200 m fly) and one bronze (400 m individual medley). 

Orogo also won a gold with fellow Hyack Kim in the Canada Summer Games pool — the 4x100 m medley relay — along with a silver gold in the 4x100 m mixed medley relay.

He also earned an individual silver medal from the 200 m backstroke race.

Justin Jung also got his silver on that second-place B.C. mixed team with Orogo, while also nabbing a bronze in the 200 m backstroke.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kong finished with a silver and a bronze in the 50- and 100-metre backstroke races at nationals. 

Paige Korbely also claimed a gold medal in her first Canadian championship appearance, winning the 50 m fly and earning a silver in the 100 m fly.
