If you have to drive, brush all the snow off your car: Burnaby RCMP

Drivers who leave snow on their vehicles' roofs create a 'blizzard' for other motorists, says Burnaby RCMP Const. Kevin Connolly.

With snow blanketing the Lower Mainland, a Burnaby RCMP traffic section officer is urging drivers who need to be on the road to drive with care and to clear the white stuff off their vehicles before they leave home.

"Take the time to clear all the snow off," Const. Kevin Connolly said.

That includes the roof, according to Connolly, to prevent other motorists from having to drive in a "blizzard" of snow coming off the tops of vehicles.

Clearing all of a vehicle's windows is important for a full field of vision, according to Connolly.

Besides creating safety concerns, not clearing vehicles properly can also lead to fines.

In years past, Burnaby RCMP has stopped vehicles that have hit the roads without being properly cleared.

Connolly's first recommendation for drivers who don’t need to be out is to stay home or take transit.

Drivers who do need to be out, should increase their follow distance and drive a speed relative to the conditions, he said.

“In these conditions, you should be going well under the speed limit,” he said.
