Impaired driving could be the cause of a car accident that shut down part of Canada Way Sunday night, police say.
First responders were called to the 5700 block of Canada Way near Burris Street after a single car went off the road and crashed into a hydro pole shortly before 7 p.m. on Nov. 22.
“(Firefighters and police) had to shut down Canada Way completely because the car was energized,” assistant fire Chief Bryan Kirk told the NOW.
Firefighters remained at the scene for about two and a half hours as they waited for B.C. Hydro crews to come and pull the car away from the pole, he added.
“You don’t mess around with electricity, that’s for sure,” Kirk said.
Burnaby RCMP are investigating the possibility that impaired driving may have caused the crash, Cpl. Daniela Panesar, spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP, said.
“It’s still under investigation,” she added.
The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old New Westminster resident, suffered a broken femur in the crash and was taken to hospital while a passenger in the vehicle was uninjured.
