Burnaby Lake will soon play host this summer to free camps geared towards Indigenous children.

Indigenous children will be able to attend free summer camps on Burnaby Lake this year thanks to a TELUS Friendly Future Foundation grant.

The Stream of Dreams Mural Society, with its headquarters located in Burnaby, received $16,000 from the TELUS program which will help support free outdoor camps for Indigenous children in Metro Vancouver.

The society helps both children and adults understand connections to local watersheds and how to make behavioural changes that can protect rivers, lakes, streams and the ocean.

“Through our partnerships with charities supporting Indigenous children and youth, we understand the importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and the long-lasting educational experiences Knowledge Keepers provide,” TELUS Friendly Future Foundation Executive Director Nimmi Kanji said in a news release.

“We are proud to be able to support Stream of Dreams Murals Society with a Community Board grant in order to help them provide free summer camp programs.”

Stream of Dreams offers environmental education and during the summer provides educational experiences for Indigenous children that gives value to Tradition Ecological Knowledge while also allowing for kids to learn about a variety of Indigenous cultures, free of charge.
