Burnaby Mountain is getting taller by the day, as a new development proposal for a tower has come forward.
At Monday night's meeting, council received a rezoning proposal for a development including a mixed-use six-storey concrete mid-rise building and a 17-storey landmark tower, with two storeys of commercial space and three-storey townhouses up at UniverCity.
"Facilities include a rooftop amenity area in the mid-rise building, as well as an amenity room in the tower totalling 3,875 square feet, which are permitted exemptions from (the) gross floor area," the planning and building department's report states. "The applicant has also provided a generous landscaped courtyard with a children's play area."
The 33,000-square-foot site is on the north side of University High Street and on the south side of Highland Court.
It's currently a parking lot and temporary sales centre for residential developments.
Nesters Market, University Highlands Elementary School, the UniverCity Childcare Centre and a residential development are located near the proposed site.
There will be 98 units in the tower, 60 in the mid-rise building and 26 townhomes in total, according to the report.
The 184 units include 95 one-bedroom, 63 two-bedroom and 26 three-bedroom units.
The University High Street frontage will be the mid-rise building, which will include two storeys for commercial use and four-storeys for residences above. The Highland Court frontage consists of threestory townhouses. The tower will be at the Tower Road corner.
On May 27, council received the initial proposal and authorized the planning and building department to work with applicant, Liberty Homes.
Council gave first reading to the project at its Aug. 26 meeting, which will go to a public hearing on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Burnaby city hall.
