Letter: Burnaby's Deer Lake is a wonderful place — to look at your phone?

This letter writer says they've been visiting Deer Lake for 30 years, but is saddened to see others with their heads down around the Burnaby park.

The Editor:

For three decades now, I've been walking around Deer Lake. It's always been a mini-getaway from the city.

But the secret is out and more people than ever are visiting Deer Lake. But one very noticeable thing has changed.

People come to Deer Lake to look at their phones.

They walk the scenic boardwalks along the shore....and look at their phones.

They walk up to the Art Gallery and Century Gardens with the stunning view of the lake....and look at their phones.

They sit on the beach....and look at their phones.

They even rent boats so they can go out on the water....to look at their phones.

I've noticed that every member of a family needs their own phone, especially tiny tots in strollers.

That way, if the family sees some ducks, instead of looking at the real ducks, they can each show other ducks on their phones.

Young couples in love walk the trails, each silently looking at their own phone, which, in seeking any silver lining here, at least delays the inevitable bickering.

It saddens me that this is our new reality.

How long before babies are born with permanently bowed heads and the palm of their hand in front of their face?
