A Burnaby man is in hospital after he was struck while riding his motorcycle on the South Fraser Perimeter Road Monday night.

The 56-year-old was travelling eastbound on the perimeter road east of 136th Street around 8:15 p.m. on June 9, when he was hit from behind by a grey Ford pickup truck, according to a media release from Surrey RCMP.

“He is in hospital and he has some facial injuries that are requiring some surgeries and what not, so he wasn’t going to be out of hospital anytime soon,” Cpl. Bert Paquet, media officer for the Surrey RCMP told the NOW.

Initially, police were concerned the victim may have suffered internal injuries from the crash, but hospital staff has since told police the victim is expected to make a full recovery.

“He hurt his lower body and also his head, … but the last update we had was that there were no internal injuries that were life-threatening,” Paquet said. “It was more just the facial injuries that are going to have to be dealt with via plastic surgery, that type of thing.”

Investigators are now focusing on locating the driver of the pickup truck who, despite getting out of his vehicle after the crash, fled the scene before police arrived, the release stated.

“We’ve got a pretty good lead on who we think it is, at least vehicle anyways,” Paquet said. “There were people at scene who were obviously attending to the health of the person who was hit and did observe some things before and afterwards.”

While investigators are pretty certain who the suspect is, they are still encouraging the driver to come forward before police track him or her down.

“The appeal is not only to the suspect to come on in, (but) to anyone else out there who may have not spoken to police and has some more information to give us. We’d gladly take that as well,” Paquet said.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
