Brentwood mall has reopened after it was evacuated this afternoon when mall administration received a threatening phone call earlier today.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the caller told administration there were "suspicious packages" within the mall that could pose a threat to safety.

"The caller suggested the mall be evacuated," said Cpl. Rick Skolrood of the Burnaby RCMP.

Mall security then called the RCMP - around 12:30 p.m. - who dispatched about eight to 10 officers, including police dogs, to help with the evacuation and search.

Skolrood said the RCMP treated the threat with care and ensured all patrons and employees were evacuated from the mall before beginning the search.

By 3 p.m. officers hadn't found anything and deemed the mall safe to reopen, starting with mall employees and shortly after, shoppers.

Skolrood said the RCMP will continue to investigate the phone call to determine whether or not mischief charges could be laid on the caller, who is still unknown at this time.
