A 27-year-old man faces a weapons charge after a passerby reported seeing him walking near a busy Burnaby mall with a knife in his hand earlier this month.

Local Mounties were conducting foot patrols in the 4800 block of Central Boulevard at about 5 p.m. on Nov. 5, when a member of the public came up to them and told them there was a man carrying a knife nearby, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The officers located the man outside the Station Square Shopping Centre, police said.

Security from the mall then told them the man had already been banned from the premises several times, according to police.

The suspect was also wanted on a warrant from Surrey for theft.

He was taken into custody and now faces charges of theft and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, according to police.
