A 22-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of a Burnaby man in Vancouver on the weekend.

Shane Frederick James Yukich, of no fixed address, has been charged with one count of murder in the death of 24-year-old Joshua Jonathan Tanasiuk of Burnaby.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred in the 1300 block of Victoria Drive in Vancouver around 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 17.

Tanasiuk was stabbed by another passenger inside a car. The driver of the car, fearing for his safety, stopped the vehicle and ran away. Alert citizens who were nearby checked the car and called 9-1-1 after seeing the critically injured man inside.

When Vancouver Police officers arrived, they found Tanasiuk clinging to life inside the car and his alleged attacker nowhere to be found. Tanasiuk, who is not known to police, died of his injuries in hospital on Saturday afternoon. He is Vancouver's 11th homicide victim of the year.

At about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, police, acting on information about the alleged attacker, arrested Yukich at a residence in the 3900 block of West 10th Avenue in Vancouver.

Yukich was taken into custody without incident and is known to police in Metro Vancouver and in Ontario for both violent and property-related offences.

Yukich made his first court appearance in provincial court on Monday morning.

Vancouver police investigators are asking anyone with further information about this incident to call the VPD homicide unit at 604-717-2500 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
