Charges have been laid against a 51-year-old man in connection with Vancouver's fifth homicide of the year.

Francois Joseph Gauthier faces one count of first degree murder and one count of possessing a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, without holding authorization or a license under which he may possess the firearm.

The BC Prosecution Service approved charges against Gauthier on Saturday, April 24, following a Vancouver police investigation into a deadly shooting that took place in Coal Harbour one week prior.

Gauthier is accused of killing Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal. The 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, after police first responded to calls of shots fired outside Cardero’s restaurant, near Coal Harbour Quay and Cardero Street, around 8:30 p.m. on April 17. First responders' attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.

Police said at the time that the shooting appeared to be targeted.

The accused remains in custody until his next court appearance.
