A man known to Port Moody police is potentially facing charges after he was found in possession of several weapons during a traffic stop on July 27, 2022.

Recommended charges are being prepared for a man known to Port Moody police (PMPD) after he was found in possession of multiple weapons.

The suspect, in his early 20s, was the passenger of a speeding vehicle officers eventually caught, which was also uninsured.

A subsequent investigation uncovered weapons that included a replica Glock handgun, several knives and pepper spray.

After midnight on July 27, PMPD observed a vehicle speeding through downtown and were led to a parking lot on 2900-block St. Johns St., where they initiated a traffic stop.

Spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias tells the Tri-City News an officer found weapons "in plain view" and the occupants inside the vehicle were arrested before a search was conducted.

Multiple weapons were discovered, and Zacharias explains the passenger now faces potential charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, including:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Carrying a concealed weapon

"It is not appropriate for the public to be in possession of weapons like these and, speaking from experience, they are often used to commit other criminal offences, for example, robberies and assaults," Zacharias adds.

"Weapons interdiction is an important element of frontline policing as it aims to prevent future violence in our community."

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle was slapped with nearly $1,000 in fines as a result of last week's traffic stop.

This includes a $598 ticket for having no insurance, $138 for speeding, as well as $109 for "driving contrary to restrictions."

The vehicle was also towed.
