Former Marian High students are gathering this summer for a reunion garden party, and the organizers are hoping to reach more grads.
The party is set for Saturday, June 9 at 2 p.m. in the courtyard at St.
Thomas More Collegiate, at 7450 12th Ave. in Burnaby. Tickets are $20 per person, and guests are asked to RSVP by June 1. For tickets or more info, go to www.marianhigh.ca.
Marian High, the former sister school to St. Thomas More Collegiate, was an all girls' Catholic school in Burnaby that shut down suddenly in the late '80s, because of a dispute between the school's union and the Catholic Public Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese.
The teachers had initially refused to sign an agreement that they would follow Catholic standards at all times, and the archbishop at the time said the board had lost confidence in the teachers' ability to deliver a Catholic education. ARTS AWARDED
Congratulations to four local secondary students who landed 2012 scholarships from the Michael J. Fox Theatre Society.
Jake Llorente from Alpha, Imran Amarshi and Shayna Virginillo of Cariboo Hill, and Central's Nicholas Burns all earned themselves scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $5,000, to help further their interest in arts.
Healthy body, healthy mind
More than 200 people turned out for a special walk at Deer Lake Park recently. The May 9 walk was to mark Mental Health Week, an annual cross-Canada initiative to engage people on issues related to mental health.
The Deer Lake walk was to promote healthy bodies and healthy minds. Attendees could walk one kilometre or five and then enjoy a barbecue and entertainment afterwards.
The event was sponsored by the Canadian Mental Health Association's VancouverBurnaby branch, the Progressive Housing Society and Fraser Health.
Coffee for Cuba
Connections Coffee House recently raised $800 for micro-financing initiatives in Cuba.
The volunteer-run café declared April 28 as Cuba Day, handed out free Cuban coffee and collected donations for the cause.
If you haven't had a chance to check out Connections yet, I strongly urge you do.
The non-profit café is backed by a local church and staffed entirely by volunteers. They get proper barista training and serve JJ Bean coffee. Regular drinks, like coffee and tea, are only $1, and specialty drinks (lattes, mochas and Americanos) are only $2.
I don't think you can find a better quality cup of coffee in Burnaby for that price. The only thing is, it's a bit tricky to find; Connections is at 5063 Anola Dr. in the Brentwood area, off of Lougheed Highway. For more info, go to connec tionscoffee.ca.
