All eastbound lanes of Highway 1 now open after earlier collision on the Port Mann bridge, however, heavy traffic remains due to lane closures for most of the day.

There is a massive traffic jam on the highway to the Port Mann bridge due to a collision and closure of east bound lanes.

A serious collision on the Port Mann Bridge stopped traffic for most of the day Monday, Sept. 27, creating long line ups through Burnaby and Coquitlam.

But at 4 p.m., the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) reported that all lanes were open.

"BCHP thanks everyone for their patience and understanding today," a media spokesperson stated in a press release.

The problem began at around 10:30 a.m., when eastbound lanes had to be closed to make way for emergency vehicles and police investigation into a serious crash.

Later the HOV lane and Surrey exit lanes were re-opened, however, eastbound through-lanes were closed for several hours, creating traffic grid-lock.

At approximately 10:20 a.m. today (Sept. 27), police and emergency services responded to a serious collision in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 on the Port Mann bridge.

Early indications are that a disabled pickup truck was rear-ended by a delivery-type vehicle — seriously injuring the driver of the pickup truck, who was outside of the vehicle. The driver of the delivery vehicle was also injured and had to be extricated by emergency crews.

The BC Highway Patrol in Burnaby is investigating and has activated the Criminal Collision Investigation Team. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is also on the scene.

Anyone with information regarding this collision should contact BC Highway Patrol in Burnaby at 604-526-9744.

Police are reminding drivers to pull off the road in the case of vehicle trouble or to get out of travel lanes to a point of safety, if possible, and to never exit your vehicle on the travel portion of a roadway or bridge.
