The NDP and Liberals have their provincial candidates in place, and now the Greens do too.
On Tuesday, the B.C. Green Party announced Rick McGowan as the candidate in Burnaby-Deer Lake.
The founder of the Metrotown Residents’ Association and vocal housing advocate will take on NDP candidate and current city councillor Anne Kang, Liberal candidate Karen Wang and independent Elias Ishak.
“I am excited to run for the B.C. Greens,” McGowan said in a press release. “Voters deserve a representative that will listen to them and act on their behalf. We need to develop and diversify our local economy, protect our environment and create a sustainable future. I feel that Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, is the most intelligent, pragmatic and trustworthy leader British Columbians have seen in a while. British Columbians finally have a credible alternative party they can vote for, rather than two parties they vote against – a truly democratic party.”
McGowan, who is a teacher, is no stranger to local politics.
He ran for the Green Party in the same riding in 2013, finishing third in the race with eight per cent of the vote. The Green candidate also ran for the municipal party in the Burnaby 2011 civic election.
The Greens now have two of the four candidates in Burnaby. Last week, Joe Keithley, the lead singer for the punk rock band D.O.A., was named the candidate for Burnaby-Lougheed.
