Veterans of Vancouver's punk scene are banding together to host a memorial show for Burnaby's Brian "Wimpy Roy" Goble, who passed away from a heart attack on Dec. 7.

"He was really a sterling guy," said Burnaby resident and DOA frontman Joe Keithley. "We grew up together on Burnaby Mountain. I met him when I was six and he was seven. ... I would describe him as a real salt-of-the-earth type of guy. Cantankerous, but fair minded."

Keithley befriended Goble as a child, while the two were walking home from Lochdale Elementary in Burnaby.

They grew up and formed the Skulls in 1977, one of the area's earliest punk bands. Goble played bass for the Skulls and also went on to play with DOA and the Subhumans.

Keithley and one of Goble's friends are organizing the memorial event on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Vancouver's Wise Hall.

Keithley, along with John Card, Ford Pier and Mike Graham will play 10 of Goble's best songs. Admission is by donation, and proceeds go to Goble's family. Goble worked at the Portland Hotel Society and left behind three children.
