More highrises for Metrotown

Three-storey buildings to come down for new sites

Three three-story apartment buildings in the Metrotown area could be demolished to make way for two highrises.

Burnaby council received two rezoning applications at the July 30 council meeting for new developments in the neighbourhood.

The first is an application from Concord Pacific for a multi-family highrise with a townhouse component at 6550 Nelson Ave.

The site is currently occupied by a three-storey apartment building in fair condition that was built in 1968, according to a staff report.

The building has 57 residences, stated an attached letter from Peter Webb, senior vice-president of development for Concord Pacific Developments Inc.

Concord Pacific is proposing a cluster of townhouses along Nelson Avenue and Lobley Park, with a 31storey tower on the western part of the site. There would be approximately 253 homes in the new development, according to the letter.

A few blocks west of Metropolis at Metrotown and Station Square, another developer is proposing a replacement of two older three-storey rental apartment buildings at 6225 and 6255 Cassie Ave. with a highrise tower.

Boffo Developments is proposing an apartment tower, without a specified height at this time, with lowrise commercial and residential space at Beresford Street and Willingdon Avenue, according to another report from the city's planning and building department.

The developer mentioned its recent success with two other highrise developments - Jewel I and Jewel II - in Metrotown.

Council approved an amendment to the Metrotown Town Centre Development Plan to incorporate street front local commercial uses at the site.

The planning and building department has been authorized to work with both applicants on a development plan that would be suitable for presentation at a public hearing.
