The latest round of Port Moody community grants has been handed out.
During Tuesday’s (June 15) regular public meeting, city council unveiled 10 recipients of the 2021 program, distributing a shared sum of $18,250 for community unity and growth.
Mayor Rob Vagramov and councillors approved the final applications presented to them by the Port Moody citizen advisory group (CAG), a team that reviewed a dozen eligible nominees for the grants available.
“The Community Grant Program provides financial assistance to community groups and non-profit organizations that contribute to the general interest and benefit of local residents and businesses,” the city explains in a news release.
It further states the city originally outlined a $20,000 budget for the community grant program with $1,750 put aside for emergency requests that would need to be approved by council.
The CAG is made up of 250 local residents of various ages, all of whom volunteer time and effort to provide public input on key city issues.

The 10 approved applicants for this year, the amount they’re receiving and what the funds will be put towards are as follows:
Abreast in a Boat
- $3,000
- To help fund participation in regattas, including the purchase new paddles and life jackets, for the purpose of increasing awareness of breast cancer
Big Sisters of B.C. Lower Mainland
- $3,000
- To fund Go Girls!, a group mentoring program for at-risk youth aged 10 to 14
Crossroads Hospice Society
- $3,000
- To continue to provide compassionate, quality, end-of-life hospice care in Port Moody
Sasamat Outdoor Centre
- $2,600
- To help cover the cost of a front entrance sign and five ecology interpretation signs
POCOMO Meals on Wheels Society
- $1,950
- To keep the price of delivered meals affordable for residents
Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society
- $1,200
- To reimburse volunteer drivers for vehicle-related expenses
Pacific Post Partum Support Society
- $1,000
- To help cover the cost of the Telephone Support Counselling program
Port Moody Aquarians
- $1,000
- To help cover the cost of equipment needed by a group of swimmers who have been granted scholarships
TROPICA (The Residents of Pleasantside Ioco Communities Association)
- $1,000
- To help cover the cost of gift baskets to welcome new families to the neighbourhood
College Park Community Association
- $500
- To support a community walk-a-thon that will encourage outdoor physical activity, promote good mental health, and inspire people to stay involved in their community
