More than 50 Burnaby organizations have benefited this year from provincial gaming grants, local MLAs say.

In a joint statement, Katrina Chen (Burnaby-Lougheed), Raj Chouan (Burnaby-Edmonds), Anne Kang (Burnaby-Deer Lake) and Janet Routledge (Burnaby North) said 54 locally-based non-profits have received more than $3 million in funding through the human and social services stream of the Community Gaming Grants program.

"Local organizations are vital to our work in strengthening communities, and building them back to be more resilient than ever," Routledge said in the statement.

"These Community Gaming Grants will support organizations like Burnaby Meals on Wheels Society, so that they can keep delivering affordable, local and nutritious food to people in need."

The province says community gaming grants provide roughly $140 million per year to approximately 5,000 non-profit organizations.

This year, the government is expected to provide $61 million to 1,364 human and social services organizations throughout B.C. including food banks, children and youth programs, mental health supports and other services that help enhance health and wellbeing.

"We know that the pandemic disproportionately affected vulnerable people, and I’m grateful for the tireless efforts of Burnaby-based organizations like Charlford House Society for Women for their ongoing work in providing addictions support and recovery," Chen said.

"This funding will ensure organizations like this one can continue to deliver programs and services to people in need, when they need it."
