More transit service up to Simon Fraser University

Back to school means back to the bus for many post-secondary students, but the trek up Burnaby Mountain could be speedier this year, according to TransLink.

Back to school means back to the bus for many post-secondary students, but the trek up Burnaby Mountain could be speedier this year, according to TransLink.

On Monday, TransLink announced additional service during peak periods on two routes up to Simon Fraser University

The #143 SFU/Coquitlam Station route is scheduled to run additional trips through the early part of the morning rush hour, with buses every 15 minutes until 7:30 a.m. and every 10 minutes until 8 a.m.

The #144 SFU/Metrotown Station route is scheduled to run every 10 minutes on buses heading north between 7 and 9 a.m. and heading south between 3 and 6 p.m.

"Increasing demand along this corridor, which connects with two SkyTrain Stations - Metrotown and Sperling/Burnaby Lake - has led to periods of overcrowding," a TransLink press release stated.

The schedule changes take effect on Monday, Sept. 5.

TransLink's service optimization initiative is re-allocating resources from under-performing routes towards routes and times of day that are under-served, according to the release.

A public meeting with the company's CEO Ian Jarvis, regarding TransLink's budget supplement, is taking place in Burnaby on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Metrotown.
