A motorcyclist racing up Burnaby Mountain at more than twice the posted speed limit is a troubling example of the kind of excessive speeding that's been on the rise in the city, according to police.
The motorcyclist streaked past a speed trap on Gaglardi Way on Oct. 21 going 127 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.
"Driving at such a high speed creates a major safety hazard for all road users, including the motorcyclist, who would be unlikely to survive a crash, and could potentially kill or seriously injure themselves or other road users," Burnaby RCMP traffic services officer Cpl. Eduardo Faustino said in the release. "This type of driving behaviour is not acceptable."
Officers impounded the motorcycle for seven days and slapped the rider with an excessive speeding ticket.
Travelling more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit is considered excessive speeding, and fines range between $368 and $483.
Burnaby RCMP has seen a spike in excessive speeding in recent months, according to the release.
In August, police ticketed 17 excessive speeders in the city, including two travelling 126 km/h and 137 km/h on Gaglardi Way.
In September, police caught 89 excessive speeders.
"As the days get shorter and the weather worsens, Burnaby RCMP would like to remind all road users to use extra caution," stated the release.
