A woman is recovering in hospital this morning after she was struck by a vehicle in Burnaby.

According to Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Marks, around 6:50 a.m. a woman was hit by an oncoming vehicle at the corner of Canada Way and Smith Avenue.

“Injuries to the female victim are non-life threatening. She was taken to Burnaby General Hospital,” he said.

Charlie Sigvardsen owns Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, which is located at the intersection where the accident took place on Canada Way.

“It happened right across the street from (the store),” he said.

He told the NOW that when he arrived at store in the morning, he had to park around the block because police had the area closed off. When he reached the store, his son was consoling an employee that had witnessed the crash.

“(The victim) was lying on the road and our one employee had seen it, and she rushed in to tell Colin, my son, and he phoned the (police),” Sigvardsen said.
The employee was quite shaken up over what she had seen, he added.

At the time, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but they have since contacted the RCMP. Investigators are now looking into the cause of the accident. Charges will be laid if they are warranted, Marks added.
