Burnaby RCMP were out in full force at four schools in the city this week enforcing the speed limit in school zones. The enforcement blitz was aimed at educating drivers of the importance of following the posted speed limits, especially in school zones.

“It’s the beginning of the school year, we want to bring some awareness to drivers that school is back in and the speed limit is 30 kilometres between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar, spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP, told the NOW.

On Wednesday, officers were at Second Street Elementary School watching for speeders. Most people were following the posted speed limit, but there was one driver caught shortly after 8 a.m. going 60 kilometres an hour – double the limit in a school zone, Panesar said.

“You’re going to have those few people that are going to speed, it doesn’t matter where they are,” she added.

Fines for speeding vary depending on how fast the driver was going. Fines are $196 for anyone caught going 20 kilometres or less over the speed limit; for drivers going 20 to 40 kilometres over the limit fines are $253; and anyone going 41 kilometres or more over the limit could face a hefty fine and have their car impounded for seven days.
