Mounties searching for victims in HIV case

Police say alleged offences occurred in Burnaby

Brian Carlisle has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault. Police allege he had unprotected sex without disclosing he was infected with HIV and that some of these alleged incidents happened in Burnaby.

Mounties have taken the unique step in disclosing that a suspect in an ongoing investigation is infected with HIV in hopes of finding anyone he may have had unprotected sex with.

Last month, a report was made to Mission RCMP accusing an Abbotsford man of having unprotected sex without telling his partners he was HIV positive. The investigation has confirmed the alleged offences took place in Burnaby as well as Mission, Abbotsford and Coquitlam, according to a press release from RCMP.

Officers believe the suspect – 47-year-old Brian Carlisle – may have offended more women than those who’ve come forward. They hope by releasing details of the investigation, other potential victims will contact investigators.

“Normally, the RCMP would not disclose the medical status of a person charged with a criminal offence. However, in this case, after careful consideration, the public interest clearly outweighs the invasion of Mr. Carlisle’s privacy,” read the release.

Carlisle has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault. He was in provincial court on Thursday and has since been released. He must abide by several court-ordered conditions while he is out, including not accessing or utilizing any social media or online dating websites; advising anyone he intends to have sexual intercourse with of his HIV status; and wear a condom during sexual intercourse, according to police.

Investigators warn Carlisle has an online presence on several social media and dating sites. He lived throughout the Lower Mainland and may have also lived in Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Vermont, United States.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 11.
