Burnaby’s only Liberal MP is hosting a town hall meeting on two issues: climate change and the Kinder Morgan pipeline, and local activists are already planning for the occasion.

Burnaby North-Seymour MP Terry Beech will hold the meeting on Saturday, July 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Confederation Community Centre.

BROKE – Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion – is encouraging people to attend and voice their concerns about climate change. The National Energy Board doesn’t consider climate change when assessing pipeline projects.

The People’s Climate Plan, a collaborative effort between non-profit groups, will host a pre-event meeting the same morning, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McGill library branch, right next door to Confederation Community Centre.

Beech said he won’t be surprised if the event attracts a lot of pipeline opponents.

“When people aren’t happy about something, that’s especially when we want to hear from them,” he said.

Beech wants to hear from community members on both sides of the issue and said the next few months are very important.

“The thing is, I have a voice on this issue; I don’t have a veto. But the more people that are engaged, the stronger my voice can be,” he said.

The federal Liberals have put together a three-person panel to consult with communities along the pipeline route. The federal government’s final decision on the project should be made public in December.

Confederation Community Centre and McGill library branch are at 4595 Albert St.

Beech is also planning a second event, most likely in early September, with all of the federal Liberal MPs in B.C. attending.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said the meeting started at 3 p.m., it's actually from 1 to 3 p.m. We apologize for the error and any confusion as a result.
