Marlborough Childcare Centre will receive a $3,000 grant for its anti-racism mural, which was created through a consultation process facilitated by the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House.
"The theme illustrates positive imagery of multiculturalism and harmony in a racially diverse community," states an engineering report. "The mural will leave a lasting legacy of an anti-racism message while beautifying the dull building, which has been a target of graffiti in the past."
The city's anti-graffiti program provides up to 50 per cent costshared funding for mural paintings, up to $3,500. The Marlborough mural cost approximately $11,000.
Heights work OK'd
City council has agreed to infrastructure work in the Heights that will cost more than $250,000.
The 2014 Hastings Street infrastructure renewal program includes watermain replacement, combined sewer separation and full width road rehabilitation, according to a report from the city's engineering director Leon Gous.
Council approved an agreement with AECOM Canada for engineering services for $257,000.
Gous noted that the project is complex due to traffic management and the impact on businesses.
