New Burnaby barrier not designed to block photographers: Trans Mountain

A barrier has been erected at the Burnaby Mountain tank farm by Trans Mountain.

The high structure inside the fence line, adjacent to Shellmont Street, is actually a “sound barrier,” according to Trans Mountain.

“It is designed to minimize the noise impacts related to our construction activities on our neighbours living near the terminal,” said an email from Trans Mountain. “As the Burnaby NOW has reported, there have been some neighbour complaints regarding noise associated with construction at the terminal. We have been actively working to determine solutions and mitigation measures where practicable to address these concerns. The temporary sound barrier is one of the measures being employed to reduce the impact of our work on our neighbours. We are committed to making ongoing improvements and continue to develop additional practical abatement measures that we anticipate will be effective at reducing sound in the area.”

Burnaby environmentalist John Preissl – who photographs the site on a daily basis and conducts tours for people in the community – says the barrier is blocking the view of construction taking place around Eagle Creek.

Preissl said that the barrier will make it more difficult to document what is going on around the creek.

“(It’s) sad that they have to do this,” Preissl said. “That is part of our community monitoring of critical areas.”
