The Burnaby school board has a new leader at the helm. Baljinder Narang was elected chair at the last board meeting on Dec. 11, replacing Larry Hayes, who served as chair for the last two years.

"I would like to begin by thanking the board and my fellow trustees for their confidence in me to serve as chair for the year 2013," Narang said in her inaugural address last Tuesday. "I feel very humbled and honoured at this privilege and commit myself to serving our school district to the best of my ability."

Narang was first elected as a school trustee in 2008 and re-elected in 2011.

Longtime trustee Ron Burton, who has served 25 years, was elected vice-chair. Burton is no stranger to leadership roles with the board, having served as both vice-chair and chair in the past.

"I feel excited," Burton told the NOW. "We have a new superintendent to work with and a new deputy superintendent. Both of them bring a lot of creativity to the district. It's going to be an exciting year."
