South Burnaby’s new ice complex will cost $44.6 million, according to a staff report from the city.
The project, at 10th Avenue and 18th Street, will be paid with density bonus dollars. (That’s money a developer pays to the city in exchange for increased density. The city uses money from the reserve to fund cultural and civic amenities, non-profit spaces, child-care centres and affordable housing.)
At Monday night’s meeting, city council approved $5.4 million in density bonus money, which will be used for the detailed design phase of the project. Staff will now issue a request for proposal to find a design firm.
The 90,600-square-foot facility will include two rinks, 150 parking spaces, pick-up and drop-off locations, an exterior plaza, and a new bike path, states the report.
Besides providing year-round ice, the two arenas will also accommodate lacrosse, ball hockey, community events and other city-run programs.
The city held an open house on Sept. 14 at the Edmonds Community Centre, showing off the facility’s schematic design.
At the time, Craig Collis, assistant director of recreation, told the NOW construction would start next fall. Completion would be sometime in 2020.
