New storage space for museum

The City of Burnaby has finally found an ideal spot for storing the Burnaby Village Museum's equipment and odds and ends.

The City of Burnaby has finally found an ideal spot for storing the Burnaby Village Museum's equipment and odds and ends.

While the museum's artifacts are stored in the environmentally controlled space in the lower level of its administration building, extra space is necessary for equipment and signage, according to Dave Ellenwood, director of parks, recreation and cultural services.

This equipment, and other mis-cellaneous supplies, doesn't need a climate-controlled environment, he said, just dry storage space.

Up until now, the equipment has been stored at a city-owned warehouse at 6857 Royal Oak Ave.

But last year that land was rezoned for commercial redevelopment, according to a report from Ellenwood. Because there isn't a lot of industrial space for sale or lease in Burnaby, the report stated, it was a challenge finding an ideal and affordable spot for the museum's extras.

However, there is space available at the parks department's warehouse at 8059 Texaco Dr., and the collection will be moved there.

That warehouse is being re-roofed, and the collection will be moved after that, Ellenwood said.

The move should take place in September or October, according to the report, and upgrading the warehouse is expected to cost $66,870.

City council approved funding of up to $74,890 from the capital reserves, for the entire project at a recent council meeting. The project cost was included in the city's 2011 budget.
