Fraser River Discovery Centre is getting into the holiday spirit this month.

Fraser River Discovery Centre is welcoming folks to celebrate the season at its Winter Discovery Days.

The centre will be open throughout December, aside from statutory holidays, and will offer a range of activities.

“Every year we put on a celebration of the holiday season at the FRDC and were happy to do so this year as part of Winter Discovery Days,” said Stephen Bruyneel, FRDC’s director of external relations and development. “We will have a range of festive, family-friendly fun that encourages how we might protect riverside ecosystems and craft seasonal gifts to spread some cheer.”

Winter Discovery Days, which runs from Dec. 8 to 31, includes the following activities:

* Science of Snowflakes (Dec. 18), where visitors will learn how snowflakes form and keep their shape. They can also make their own unique snowflake decorations.

* Hibernation and Habitats (Dec. 20 and 27). Guests can learn about which animals along the Fraser River hibernate in FRDC’s jumbo board game, and use provided materials to create their very own hibernation den.

* Upcycled Creations (Dec. 22 and 29) gives folks a chance to put plastic to good use by creating recycled plastic holiday decorations. While plastics are useful materials, FRDC states they’re also one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world.

* Gifts of the Fraser (Dec. 24 and 31) provides visitors with an opportunity to create personalized greeting cards, decorate picture frames, and DIY snow globes.

“While everyone is welcome to join us for Winter Discovery Days, these activities are intended for children aged six and up,” Bruyneel said in a press release. “Our public health and safety protocols will also remain in place, including masks for all visitors aged five and older, and proof of vaccination for all visitors over the age of 12. Pre-registration is also recommended.”

Winter Discovery Days runs from Dec. 18 to Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission fees to Fraser River Discovery Centre will apply.

Located at 788 Quayside Dr, on New Westminster’s waterfront, Fraser River Discovery Centre provides a variety of exhibits and programs related to the Fraser River.
