A New Westminster police officer was taken to hospital for minor injuries Tuesday after his cruiser collided with a red Camaro in Burnaby.

According to Burnaby RCMP Staff-Sgt. Robert Marks, the officer was on duty when the crash happened just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Kingsway and Griffiths Avenue.

"A New Westminster police car . . . was driving beside a red Camaro," Marks said. "The police vehicle tried to get by the Camaro and basically, the lanes converged down into one and the police vehicle didn't clear the other one and they struck each other."

The Burnaby traffic section is now probing the collision. It's unclear whether the cruiser was responding to a call or if he was trying to pull over the Camaro.

Marks also couldn't comment on early reports that suggested the cruiser had run a red light.
