The Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion is celebrating six decades of service for people with disabilities at an upcoming open house event.

A non-profit group that provides services to people with developmental disabilities is one step closer to breaking ground on a $4 million project that would bring a new child-care facility and non-market rental housing to Burnaby.

The Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion plans to redevelop its 3755 Banff Ave. home on property it leases from the city. The Filby Court property is currently home to a two-storey building with nine apartments and a daycare.

BACI wants to replace the daycare with a new building and child-care facility on the ground floor and nine non-market units above. The charity also plans to build six more non-market units above.

The proposal passed first reading at a Monday council meeting and will go to a public hearing on July 24.

BACI recently secured $2.46 million in funding from B.C. Housing for the project after a year-long series of negotiations with the province, Coun. Colleen Jordan said at the meeting.

“It’s been a year getting to this stage and everyone’s anxious to move forward on having an additional 15 units of non-market housing and remodeling the childcare and common area facilities that are present at the site now,” she said.

BACI previously secured a $1.7 million density bonus grant from the City of Burnaby for the project.
