District of North Vancouver council says it’s time to tame Mount Seymour.
The district is kicking off a significant project to produce a strategic plan for trails on the sprawling mountain, which have become the North Shore’s Wild West (or east).
Unlike nearby Mount Fromme, which has well-established, regulated and maintained trails, Seymour has a growing maze of unsanctioned trails and mountain bike features, many of which are dangerous and harmful to the environment, district staff told council Monday night. That has only gotten worse during COVID-19 but staff say they have not had adequate resources to respond.
The strategic plan should reflect a number of key values, according to staff — environmental protection, sustainability in trail infrastructure and use, and multi-use access, staff say.
Over the next year, district staff intend to consult with the community, land managers, First Nations and user groups before coming up with a list of recommended actions to begin implementing in 2022.
