Burnaby's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lost an apparent tiebreaker to Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog in Calder Memorial Trophy voting on Wednesday.
According to NHL.com, Landeskog, the second overall pick in the 2011 draft, was named the rookie of the year at the NHL awards based on scoring two more goals last season than the Edmonton Oilers No. 1 overall pick, Nugent-Hopkins.
Both Nugent-Hopkins and Landeskog were named to the NHL all-rookie team, which included New Jersey forward Adam Henrique, defencemen Justin Faulk of Carolina and Toronto's Jake Gardiner and Buffalo goalie Jhonas Enroth.
Nugent-Hopkins placed first among rookie pointgetters with 52 points, including 18 goals, despite missing 20 games with shoulder injuries.
The Burnaby Winter Club product scored a game-winning goal in his NHL debut with the Oilers against Pittsburgh. He also tallied the first hat trick of his professional hockey career in his third NHL game.
Nugent-Hopkins became the first 18-year-old in league history to garner five assists in one game. His 0.84 points-per-game average also topped all NHL rookies.
Voting was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.
