Offices sprouting up all over as candidates gear up

Janet Routledge kicked off her campaign on Sunday with a campaign office opening at 4688 Hastings St. - just down the block from NDP MP Kennedy Stewart's office.

Routledge handles employment insurance appeals and is a past director of political action at the B.C. Federation of Labour, according to a previous interview with the NOW.

She also led the anti-HST campaign in Burnaby and has lived in the riding for 17 years.

LEE HOLDS OPEN HOUSE

Liberal Burnaby North MLA Richard Lee is also launching his campaign in the riding with an open house this Saturday at 2: 30 p.m.

Those interested in volunteering with his campaign are invited to sign up at the open house at 201-4199 Lougheed Hwy.

Lee has been the Burnaby North MLA since 2001 and was re-elected in 2005 and 2009.

He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Asia-Pacific in 2011 and serves as member of the cabinet committee on open government and engagement, and the select standing committees on children and youth, health and legislative initiatives.

CORRIGAN KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN MONDAY

NDP Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Kathy Corrigan is launching her campaign for re-election next Monday.

Her campaign office opening will take place from 5: 30 to 8: 30 p.m. at 5593A Kingsway.

In 2009, Corrigan won the Deer Lake seat from Liberal MLA John Nuraney.

Corrigan is the NDP's opposition critic for public safety and a former Burnaby school board chair.

MEET THE CANDIDATES

The writ doesn't drop until Tuesday but already local community organizations are gearing up for the election, planning all-candidates meetings in their neighbourhoods.

The first meeting for the Burnaby North riding takes place on Thursday, April 25 in the Gilmore Community School gym. The doors open at 6: 30 p.m., and the meeting runs from 7 to 8: 30 p.m.

The meeting is being held by the Burnaby Heights Neighbourhood Association and is being hosted by Bob Nixon, a CBC TV reporter and local resident.

The four Burnaby North candidates - current Liberal MLA Richard Lee, NDP candidate Janet Routledge, B.C. Conservatives candidate Wayne Marklund and B.C. Green Party candidate Carrie McLaren - are scheduled to be at the meeting.

CAPITOL HILL MEET SET

Another Burnaby North all-candidates meeting is planned for Sunday, April 28.

The meeting is co-hosted by the Civic Association of Iranian-Canadians, Capitol Hill Community Hall Association and Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE).

It is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Community Hall, 361 S. Howard Ave. The meeting will include all four of the Burnaby North riding candidates, as well.
