Knowing where you're going is an important life skill to have and the Fraser River Discovery Centre is wanting to help ensure people don't get lost.

On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, River Basin Days will be returning to Central Park with an introduction to orienteering.

"At this month's River Basin Days, we're going to focus on orienteering," FRDC Director of External Relations and Development Stephen Bruyneel says in an announcement.

"And there's no better place to do that than in beautiful Central Park in Burnaby!"

Orienteering involves navigating a course using a compass and map while finding your way from checkpoint to checkpoint without getting lost. The one-hour workshop will help participants gain a basic understanding of map reading and compass use practicing skills on the 1.25 kilometre orienteering course.

Pre-registration for the event is required and can be completed online with group sizes limited to a maximum of five people. Workshop registration is limited to four groups. Registration also includes admission to the Fraser River Discovery Centre.

When participants pay at registration, they will be admitted for free the next time they visit the centre in person.

Prices are as follows:

  • Family Ticket ($15.00 each) – covers 2 adults and up to 3 children
  • Adult Ticket ($6.00) – Adult 19 and older
  • Senior Ticket ($5.00) – Senior 65 and older
  • Student Ticket ($5.00) – Student ID required
  • Child ticket ($3.00) – children aged 3-12
  • Children 2 and under register for free

The event is scheduled to run from 2 to 3 p.m., with the possibility of a second workshop from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. should there be enough interest.

Participants are asked to meet in the parking lot on the west side of the park, off of Boundary Road.

Everyone is welcome, however, the workshop is aimed at older children and their families.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre says masks are required and groups must follow physical distancing guidelines.
