An ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at a Burnaby long-term care facility has claimed a life with case counts continuing to jump.

In an emailed statement to the NOW on Jan. 11, 2022, Fraser Health said there have been 21 confirmed cases involving 10 residents and 11 staff members.

One death has been officially been recorded from the outbreak, which was declared on Jan. 5, 2022, when six cases were discovered. It's unclear if the death was related to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.

When the outbreak was declared by Fraser Health, it was the second time in less than one month the facility had been hit.

"The health and safety of our long-term care residents, their families and our staff is our first priority and is a responsibility that we take very seriously," the statement from Fraser Health said.

"Our condolences go out to those who’ve lost loved ones throughout the pandemic."

George Derby Centre was subject to an outbreak last year on Nov. 8, 2021, when there were 10 confirmed cases.

The outbreak included 24 cases involving 16 residents and eight staff members. One death was also recorded.

In November of 2020, the centre endured a tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.

As of publication, there are five Burnaby long-term care facilities under outbreak declarations including George Derby Centre, Dania Home, New Vista Care Centre, Chartwell Carlton Garden and AgeCare Harmony Court.
