One man is dead and another is in hospital after a workplace accident at a North Burnaby residential site.

Megan Johnston of WorkSafe B.C. told the Burnaby NOW that the accident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. this Thursday morning.

"Two workers were in a trench laying pipe when a concrete retaining wall collapsed on them," said Johnston. "The wall was five-feet high and 40-feet long.

"Both workers were taken to VGH (Vancouver General Hospital). I can now confirm that one person has died," she said, adding that WorkSafe is now looking into the case and the coroner's office is also involved.

Both the Burnaby RCMP and the Burnaby Fire Department were at the scene of the accident.

Johnston said that while she couldn't release the exact location of the accident, she did say the contractor involved is J. Cote & Son Excavating Ltd., a company based out of Surrey.

When the Burnaby NOW called J. Cote's offices, a receptionist said management was currently out of the country and would be returning later on Thursday. Comments on the accident would not be available prior to Thursday night.
