One of the busiest bus routes that leaves from Burnaby has had the number of stops cut back.

TransLink's bus stop balancing program is removing a total of 21 stops from the system's Route 25, which leaves from Brentwood SkyTrain station in Burnaby.

The program aims to reduce the number of stops along routes where there are too many close together to help travel time and congestion issues, states the Translink website.

To minimize impacts on customers, TransLink proposed changes to approximately one in eight of the least used bus stops along Route 25. This means:

  • 97 per cent of customers will continue to use their current bus stops and enjoy a faster, more reliable trip.
  • Only 3 per cent may experience a longer walk or roll which will be offset by a shorter trip on the bus.
  • The average spacing between bus stops will be 372 metres, which is about a 4 minute walk or 5 minute roll.

Along with the removals there will be some additions, with new stops to balance where some removals are happening.

TransLink says its buses spend around 700,000 hours waiting at bus stops every year and reducing the number of stops will reduce that.

The program has reduced stops on routes on a regular basis recently, with three other routes already completed and dozens of stops removed.

survey on the changes is open to the public up until Jan. 17.
