Opinion: Reckless Skytrain rider doffing mask to apply makeup is enraging

Masks must be worn at all times on transit

A SkyTrain rider without a mask applies makeup.

I just finished writing about a SkyTrain rider putting other people at risk by taking off his mask so he could eat and sip coffee for a while – violating mask rules – when Daryl Dela Cruz alerted me to another reckless rider.

“Not amused at this young woman who thinks SkyTrain is the best place to do her makeup, her mask completely off in the process,” tweeted Dela Cruz, with the photo you see above.

Look how close she is to other SkyTrain riders and she thinks it’s OK to not use a mask. She could easily put on her makeup once off of the SkyTrain.

It’s ridiculous how people are putting others at risk for such silly reasons.

I say this as the number of people fighting for their lives with COVID-19 in B.C. hospitals continues to hit record highs. As of April 19, there are 441 such people, up by a net total of 16, compared with the most recent update, on April 16.

The number of those in intensive care units (ICU) also keeps hitting levels not seen before. There are 138 people now in ICU fighting COVID-19 in B.C.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the province has developed four potential scenarios for hospitalization in the fall and winter.

"We're clearly at the high-plus-plus range of this right now," he said.

New cases continue to be high, with 2,960 cases in the past three days: 1,027 on April 17, 933 on April 18, and 1,000 on April 19. In total, 120,040 people have contracted COVID-19 in B.C., with more than 90.7%, or 108,918 people having recovered.

Another eight people have died from the virus in the past three days, raising the province's death toll to 1,538. One of those individuals was a two-year old child who had an underlying health condition.

"It is an unusual event," Henry said of the fatality of the child. "It is a true tragedy."
