Opinion: Terrible driver roars through Burnaby walkway, plunges 50 feet (video)

It was a steep drop for this driver

I’ve covered a lot of really terrible crashes in my time as a journalist, but this one really hits home.

Mainly because I grew up just steps away from where a terrible driver did some really terrible things.

I mean just look at the photos above and watch the video below - it's sickening.

It was 2:15 p.m. on Monday when a driver went down a dead-end laneway in a housing complex east of Sperling Avenue. The driver then drove through a pedestrian walkway, through a fence and plunged about 50 feet down and across the road before ending up on its side.

Police and fire crews responded and needed to use the jaws of life to get the driver out.

Miraculously, it doesn’t appear anyone else was hurt. I can still remember skateboarding down that pedestrian path. It’s well-used because it connects Broadway with Lougheed so people can get to the Sperling-Burnaby Lake SkyTrain station.

Sure, it’s possible the person was having a medical emergency when they drove through the fence and plunged onto the road. But call me cynical because I’ve seen too many bad drivers end up in these situations.
