Okaeri おかえり Return from Exile: All Paths Lead Home
Feb. 20 also marks Heritage Week in B.C., and Nikkei National museum & Cultural Centre in Burnaby will kick off the celebration with an oral history video project in conjunction with the Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall.
The videos will launch in celebration of Heritage Week on Feb. 20, 2023, on the NNMCC Youtube channel .
The oral history project, Okaeri おかえり, will feature 21 interviews with Japanese-Canadians who lived through the Second World War.
They share their individual experiences of the nisei or second-generation Japanese-Canadians who lived through internment in Canada. The project also sheds light on stories of the kika-nisei — who were nisei, but who were uprooted to Japan and later returned to Canada in the 1950s.
The life stories are first-hand accounts of their challenges and what it meant for them to “return home” (Okaeri おかえり means ‘welcome back home’).
When: Feb. 20
