Parent groups from 14 Burnaby schools are getting refunds for money spent on playground equipment.
"Parent advisory councils work hard throughout the school year to raise money to support students and their learning, and it's great to be able to give back some of their hard-earned dollars," said Education Minister George Abbott.
In all, 102 elementary schools across B.C. are getting money back, totalling $2.4 million. The money comes from Premier Christy Clark's promise of $8-million in funding for playgrounds, a commitment made in September.
Each district was asked to identify schools that recently bought playground equipment with money raised by the parent advisory councils. The parent groups were eligible for up to $50,000 in refunds.
There is still another $3.6 million for playground upgrades, repairs and replacements across B.C.
Jennifer Mezei, head of the districtwide parents' advisory council, wasn't surprised about the refunds, as they were mentioned back in September.
"We didn't know what schools were going to get it," Mezei said. "I think any time parents are given a refund, it gives them more opportunity to provide community events and equipment for the students. We are really pleased they've received a refund."
Mezei said the amount of refunds Burnaby schools are receiving reflects how much parents are committed to improving students' experiences inside and out of the classroom.
