Anew café with a Parisian twist is brewing in the Heights, and partially covered windows are only encouraging people to press their faces up against them to sneak a peak at what's developing.
Café owner Theresa Pantano caught up with the Burnaby NOW to give an update on how things are going at her new digs, near the corner of Hastings Street and Gilmore Avenue (previously Adele-Rae florist's shop).
She hopes to open the café in early October.
Pantano said she had been looking for the perfect space for her new business for the last year and a half in Burnaby.
Her vision is to provide locals with a place to go at night, as she's considering having the café open in the morning and in the evening.
The Parisian treats and baked goods will be locally made and delivered to the café, Pantano says.
"It'll be a café and bakery," she said. "We've outsourced a lot to La Baguette from Granville Island."
As for the interior design, Pantano described it as being "very vintage" and "very Parisian."
"When people walk into my place I want them to think they're walking into Paris," she said. "It'll be very cool, very European."
Pantano has more than 35 years of experience working in the restaurant business, including owning her last restaurant in Australia up until recently when she decided to move back to her hometown, Burnaby.
The café is also a family affair, as Pantano co-owns it with her sister and son.

Edmonds centre gets silver The Edmonds Community Centre received three Silver Awards of Excellence from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.
Burnaby's newest community centre won under the General Contractor $15 million to $40 million, Electrical Contractor over $2 million and President's Trade Award categories.
"The Silver Award winners this year all represent companies that were able to bring projects of the highest calibre in on time and on budget," said Jan Robinson, the association's interim president, in a media release.
The community centre was amongst 38 projects considered, and 42 total nominees.
The gala dinner and award ceremony is on Oct. 17 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. One Silver Award winner from each category will be chosen as the Gold Award winner during the event.

ShakeOut are putting on Disaster Chef - Burnaby, which is an emergency preparedness contest.
Five finalists will compete in the Disaster Chef Cook Off, a recorded-live cooking contest on Oct. 17. The winner will be chosen by celebrity judges.
